Winter tree identification hike at Backus, Jan. 26

Tree enthusiasts will not want to miss this opportunity. On Sunday, Jan. 26, the Long Point Region Conservation Authority (LPRCA) is hosting a walk at Backus Heritage Conservation Area to learn how to identify trees in winter.

The Winter Tree ID Hike starts at 1 p.m. with a short presentation inside the Conservation Education Centre and then heads outside for a 90-minute wintry walk through the park with retired forester Dolf Wynia.

Discover the way twigs, buds and bark, not to mention needles and cones, can help identify a tree. Learn some quick tips that will help in identifying some common trees.

Children will learn lots of fascinating nature facts with LPRCA’s Outdoor Educator Fiona Street. A separate children’s winter tree identification program includes a craft, activities, a short winter nature walk, a winter tree-themed story and, of course, a visit through the Conservation Education Centre’s display galleries.

Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for snow-covered trails. Admission to the Winter Tree ID Hike is by donation.

In the event of inclement weather, the indoor portions of the Winter Tree Identification program will be offered, with the two hikes cancelled.

Contact Fiona Street at 519-586-2201, Ext 5 or email outdoored@lprca.on.ca for more information. Backus Heritage Conservation Area is located 2 km north of Port Rowan.

Check the LPRCA website at www.lprca.on.ca for a complete listing of special events and guided nature walks taking place at Backus Heritage Conservation Area in 2014.
