LPRCA issues high-water warning

The Long Point Region Conservation Authority has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement: Water Safety due to a combination of above-zero temperatures and precipitation on top of existing snow.

A Water Safety Statement is issued to advise municipal flood coordinators and watershed residents that unsafe lake, river and channel conditions exist or may develop.

Watershed residents are already viewing the effects of the combination with ample flowing and standing water in evidence. Residents are warned to stay away from streams, rivers, ponds and ditches, due to the high water in conjunction with potentially-dangerous icy conditions. Particular caution is urged with regards to young children, who may well be attracted to bodies of water.

Anticipated ramifications of current conditions include ice jams along the Big Otter Creek in Vienna and Port Burwell caused by the breakup of existing ice cover on watercourses. Landowners are also requested to ensure dams, culverts and catchbasins are free from debris and functioning properly.

Given the current weather forecast, water levels are expected to remain high throughout next week and the statement is in effect until noon, Wednesday (January 15). LPRCA staff will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will update the water safety message as necessary.
