Ice storm slams into Oxford

More than 1,500 Hydro One customers in Oxford County were without power following a major ice storm that has affected and crippled some parts of Ontario.

From the Hydro One website it appears all corners of the county were affected with pockets of outages. The Innerkip area appears from the outage map to be the largest area affected. Power was expected to be restored by 12 p.m. Dec. 23.

Some Woodstock Hydro customers reported through social media they too experienced outages, but how many and for how long is not known at this time.

Patients residing at VON Sakura House, just outside of Woodstock had to be evacuated to hospital Sunday after power was lost to the hospice. The outage started around 5 a.m. and without a backup generator the facility couldn’t remain open a volunteer told the Sentinel-Review.

Blair Duhamel, a roads department employee for Oxford County said he started work at about 5 a.m. clearing branches and limbs off roads, salting and plowing ice where needed. Other members of the crew were called in at 2 a.m. to deal with the effects of the storm.

“It doesn’t seem too bad. We’ve seen a lot of fallen branches but no major damage to houses,” he said while cutting dangerous branches off a tree north of Norwich Sunday morning.

At about 12 p.m. he was headed home to see if there was any damage at his house.

Tiffanii Gamble, a Hay Lane (Woodstock) resident woke up to find an overgrown bush had fallen on her father’s pickup truck.

“It’s pretty big. It split in half the other half landed in someone’s backyard,” she said.

From what the family could see the bush didn’t cause any serious damage to the older Ford F150, her dad just bought to fix up.

“We’re surprise the back window isn’t smashed or anything,” she said.

By 3 p.m. Sunday neither the Oxford OPP nor the Woodstock Police Service had reported any serious collisions.
