TIGER TALES

Welcome back Courtland Tigers! A warm welcome is extended to our new staff and students.

On Sept. 9 we had OPP officer Ed Sanchuck visit our school with an Anti-Bullying presentation for our Grades 5-8 students.

Our annual “Meet the Teacher” night was held on Sept. 16 with a wonderful turn out! We served hamburgers and hotdogs for supper and then all the parents and guests were free to meet our teachers and explore the school. We “smiled big” on Sept. 16 for picture day!

Our parents’ council (C.O.P.E.) had their first meeting on Sept. 26 and elections were held as well. We were happy to see some new faces and welcomed back returning parents. All Courtland P.S. parents are welcome to attend! Check the newsletter or website for upcoming dates.

This year at Courtland Public School, our National School Run Day for Terry Fox was held on Sept. 26. Terrance Stanley Fox was born on July 28, 1958 and passed away on June 28, 1981. Because Terry had bone cancer, he had his right leg amputated just above his knee in 1980. That same year, he began his “Marathon of Hope”, wanting to raise money and awareness for cancer research. His goal was to raise $28 million or $1 for each Canadian. He began his journey by stepping into the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He had hoped to end his journey by stepping into the Pacific Ocean in Victoria, British Columbia. He was forced to stop, just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to the spread of cancer to his lungs. During his marathon, Terry ran 5,373km in just 143 days and raised $1.7 million.

At Courtland P.S. this year, we had a “hat day” and “orange and black” day (our school colours) with the students donating 50 cents each for each event. Between our events and our pledge sheets, we raised over $1,500 for the Terry Fox Foundation! Go Tigers! Thanks to all staff, students and parents for participating, with a special thank you going to Mrs. Sharpe and Mr. Antoniolli for all your hard work with the events.

It’s been an exciting first month of school and we look forward to the upcoming events in October at C.P.S.
