In fact, we 'are there yet'

Article content

When we are little we can’t wait to get there. Of course, it means something a whole lot different when we are little.

Later on we are too busy living life to even think about it. Down the road we begin to worry about it and before we know it we are there. Some unfortunately never make it, some of you are getting pretty close and some of us are already there and hopefully enjoying it.

What is it? Old!

It’s not a death sentence to become what is affectionately termed a senior. There are lots of us who are having the best time, doing things we never thought we would. We have earned the freedom and time to explore new dreams and goals. We can search out pursuits and interests that only come with having arrived. There are opportunities and adventures we are not, at any other time in our lives, able to experience.

In order to do all that, we need to prepare adequately and take care of ourselves. For a lot of us we haven’t always done such a good job of that but it’s not too late. We all need exercise, good nutrition, activities we enjoy, good health care, control of stress, friends and fun.

On September 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Tillsonburg Seniors’ Centre is hosting a Seniors’ Health and Wellness Fair which will feature some 35 organizations and businesses ready to explain how they can fill your needs and help make your senior years happy, full and healthy.

There are four seminars being held during the day. Tax Benefits for Seniors will be at 10:45 a.m. with Jeremy Bertrand of the Ministry of Finance. At 1 p.m. Laura Lightheart, McFarlan Rowlands Insurance, will explain the Ins and Outs of Estate Insurance. Jodi Rice and Jodi Haskett, dietetic technicians, will discuss Nutrition for Seniors and seniors’ centre program co-ordinator, Karen Rohrer, will talk on preventing falls at 3 p.m.

Anyone interested in taking one or all of the seminars must call the centre to register at 519-688-2520, as space is limited.

This will also give anyone not familiar with the Tillsonburg Seniors’ Centre an opportunity to see what a wonderful facility this is. Some of the activities the centre offers, on a regular basis are: three levels of fitness so you can do as much or as little as you are able; line dancing and clogging, yoga, the Melody Makers and the Seniors Choir, a variety of card games, opportunities for quilters and sewers, golf, a fully equipped woodworking shop, pool tables, carpet bowling, shuffleboard, computer lessons, bingo, and much more. New and interesting programs like the hand bell choir, Zumba, scrapbooking, floral design, etc. are also introduced along with the regular programs so there is always something for everyone.
