Tillsonburg Hospital Yard Sale goes back to its Extravaganza roots

Article content

Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Volunteer Association is hosting a Hospital Yard Sale in the Crystal Palace at the Tillsonburg fairgrounds entrance near Sanders Street on Saturday, Sept. 7.

And they need items that can be added to the yard sale. Donations can be made Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. up to Wednesday, Sept. 4, when they will accept donations from 8-8.

“Extravaganza as we knew it is no long a viable option,” said Donna Scanlan of the TDMH Volunteer Association.

“Our committee has pulled some past Extravaganza volunteers and added new members to support this Hospital Yard Sale.”

When Tillsonburg Tri-County Fair president Mike Dean offered the yard sale committee use of the Crystal Palace – the building with the green roof – they jumped on it.

“And here we are today,” said Scanlan, who was working this week with committee members to organize and sort yard sale items.

“The great story here is that these fairgrounds, some 20 years ago or more, is exactly where the first Extravaganza-type event started. Funny how history can repeat itself. We are lucky to have these great fairgrounds where history can repeat itself, not only for support to our hospital, but other events throughout the year for Tillsonburg residents.”

Proceeds from the Hospital Yard Sale, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 7, will go towards updating equipment at TDMH.

“Beyond benefiting patients with state-of-the-art equipment, it is also a factor in doctor recruitment and retention.”

Volunteers are placing posters and signage throughout the town with information on donation drop-off days.

“Items that are gently used and nearly new would be greatly appreciated.”

Some items cannot be accepted. For example, said Scanlan, they cannot accept large furniture, large appliances, electronics, computers, baby cribs, child-car seats, tires, large and small hardcover books, televisions, used paint cans, or canning jars.
