Former delicatessen remains vacant

Little progress has been made in the repurposing of the former butcher shop on Main Street.

Peter Retsinas, a Tillsonburg businessman, purchased the former Beefland Delicatessen and accompanying apartments and house during an auction in September, 2012.

“I tried to rent it but no one wants it,” he said during a telephone interview.

He said he had a few perspective clients explore the idea of re-opening the shop but it was too costly.

Retsinas is still looking for someone to rent the storefront but isn't doing anything with the property in the meantime.

In October, 2012, Retsinas told the News-Record he planned to renovate the store. He said he is still willing to do so once he finds an occupant.

Inside, passersby can see the store is still in the same disarray it was when it unexpectedly closed without explanation in June leaving customers confused.

For a few weeks, a hand-written sign stating “Holy day” was taped to the front door, however the store never reopened.

Products remained on the shelves but the News-Record was never able to contact the former owner, Luc Brackx.
