Woman takes a hike to help Delhi youth

Kimberly Sturch will walk 88-kilometres and reach seven summits with a combined altitude of 4,625 metres to benefit local children.

Sturch is one of 13 Canadian Tire partners from across the country taking part in the Jumpstart fundraiser Reach the Summits for Kids.

“It is a great opportunity,” she said.

Sturch will trek through the Canadian Rocky Mountain National Parks, including Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, from Sept. 6 to Sept. 14.

“I'm ecstatic about it. How many people can say they've hiked the Rocky Mountains?” she said.

Sturch is walking 10-km a day to help prepare for the hike.

She is also busy raising money, which will stay in the community to help children aged four to 18 participate in organized sports and other recreational activities.

While she is excited to experience the sights and sounds of the Rockies, she is more excited about the possibilities that the money raised will provide for local children.

“I am more excited for the money that is coming back to the community,” she said.

Last year, Jumpstart helped 19 kids locally, with a total of $3,800.

Sturch has a goal almost as tall as the summits she will be climbing. Her goal is to raise $10,000 – all of which will stay within the local Jumpstart chapter.

Donations can be made in the Delhi store through cheque or through the purchase of a cutout.

Donations can also be made online at http://www.ctjumpstart.ca/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=1841562#.UYXSmHCTSzl.email.
