Yard sale, strawberry social to kick off season at Teeterville museum

The summer season in Teeterville will officially begin with the museum's annual Hillbilly Yard Sale and Strawberry Social this weekend.

An assortment of gently used household wares, toys, furniture and books will be available for sale starting at 8 a.m. followed by a feast of fresh local strawberries.

“We cut them up and serve them with cake and ice cream,” said Jodie Keene, the Teeterville Pioneer Museum's summer coordinator.

The yard sale and strawberry social is the first event of the summer for the Teeterville Pioneer Museum, which opened its doors on Victoria Day.

While the museum grounds, which include a chapel, log cabin and barn, were quiet on opening day, activity was expected to pick up as the museum's summer events unfold.

Following the yard sale, the museum will host its always popular event - the Teddy Bear Picnic, held on the first Sunday of July.

Local children gather their cherished teddy bears to parade them around the grounds, enter them into contests and play games with them.

Parents and grandparents are also encouraged to take part in the fun.

“We are hoping the teddy bear picnic will be really big this year,” said Keene.

The picnic starts at 1 p.m. with a cost of $5 per person. Participants can register up to three stuffed animals each and will have the chance to meet the museum's life-sized teddy bear, Teeter.

Keene is also busy writing the museum's annual murder mystery, which is slated for mid-August.

The english student said she was excited to be utilizing her writing skills.

“It's kind of my thing,” she said.

Guests will arrive at the scene of a crime and will have to use their detective skills to figure out the whodunit.

While all of the traditional events will be back at the museum this year, Keene is also working on new ideas, which will be revealed later in the season.
