There are a number of exciting projects on tap for Delhi this year the crowd was told at the Delhi and District Chamber of Commerce's annual general meeting last Wednesday.

Norfolk County Councillor Mike Columbus, who represents the Delhi area, gave an economic development update on behalf of the county at the meeting.

Columbus highlighted a number of projects set to begin in 2013 and 2014 including the construction of a sewage treatment facility set to begin in August of this year and a new watermain on Fertilizer Road to service the area between Wilson Avenue to Church Street.

There are also a number of road repairs scheduled.

In 2014, Queen Street will be rebuilt from William Street to Eagle Street.

“There is some bad deterioration. It needs a major job there,” said Columbus.

Argyle Street and Main Street will also receive upgrades.

The sidewalks in the downtown core will be upgraded as well.

In cooperation with the Delhi BIA the paving stone path along Church Street to King Street will be replaced by concrete this summer. This will also include some tree removal and tree replacement.

“This will eliminate trip hazards and reduce the weed pressure that the county is continuously dealing with,” said Columbus. “That should spruce up the area.”

The sidewalk in front of St. Frances Cabrini School on Northern Avenue will also be replaced.

Columbus made a special note of one project that was completed days before the meeting.

“Perhaps a few have noticed, the dilapidated tobacco leaf sign on the west side of town has been spruced up by the county,” said Columbus to a roar of applause.

“I told them I had to have that done before the VandenBussche girls got to this chamber dinner,” said Columbus. “It's not 100% but it certainly looks a lot better.”

Columbus ended his presentation by saying, “All community projects and programs take time, energy and money. We are very fortunate to have some many great community volunteers.

“Our community is truly so fortunate for the volunteers that give their gift of time, energy and sometimes money. By working together great things can happen in Delhi and Norfolk County – making it a great place to live.”
