Free anger management, wellness seminar

A free anger management and wellness seminar is being held for Tillsonburg residents Wednesday, May 8 at the Carriage Hall.

The information session runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is open and free of charge to the public.

The anger management and wellness seminar is being presented by Tammy Francoeur and Nigel Turner of Turning Point’s Habitude Program in Hamilton.

“Nigel Turner is one of the best anger management therapists in Canada. He understands about addictions, anger, anxiety and how this goes hand in hand with relationships,” said Oxford County OPP constable Frank Kempf. “A big part of it is understanding – and that’s the part where Nigel lays it out so you understand about where anger comes from and gives you a different thought process about what anger is.”

The presentation and seminar will discuss a number of topics, including the basics of anger and anger management, boundaries and assertiveness, differences between men and women, abuse, power and control and the law, addictions and anger, depression and anger and your response to anger, productive listening, validation and empathy.

In addition, those in attendance will learn how to stop anger and what you need to do to control it at home, with family, friends, co-workers and strangers. There will also be an opportunity for members of the public to participate in a question and answer period.

“After the seminar they’re going to have a group session, with anybody that wants to stay afterwards to ask questions,” said Kempf. “Tammy will be speaking about drug addiction and wellness, about people’s lifestyles, their health and just their general well being.”

Kempf has known Francouer for several years and has attended group sessions as an OPP officer with both her and Turner and is familiar with their work. He believes the program helps many people from across Canada every year and said the information and resources provided in the seminar, will also help residents in Tillsonburg and across Oxford County.

“It’s a matter of understanding where it comes from and how to deal with it,” explained Kempf. “And that there are people who care out there and people that will help you.

“I’ve seen it first hand - from Tammy’s treatment centre,” he added. “I’ve seen people have their lives turned around and in fact, even saved their lives. It’s phenomenal.”

In addition to the help and guidance provided with Turning Point’s Habitude program, the aftercare patients receive upon leaving is beneficial and life-changing, Kempf noted.

“I’ve even had people that I’ve referred there and that I’ve sent there, that have come out and their lives have been totally turned right around. And they have a two-year aftercare program that’s excellent.”

Kempf said that the anger management and wellness seminar is an excellent learning opportunity and is something that will benefit everyone in the community.

“I hope people will take something away from this seminar - that will make their lives better and allow them to have better relationships with their friends and family,” Kempf concluded.
