Dance for Heart

Dance for Heart is making a comeback in Tillsonburg.

You can ‘Dance Your Heart Out’ in celebration of National Dance Week and support the Heart and Stroke Foundation on Saturday, April 27 from 1-4 p.m. at the Tillsonburg Community Centre’s Kinmsen Memorial Arena.

“Dance for Heart is a fundraiser for Heart and Stroke – it’s a community event for everyone,” said Town of Tillsonburg’s Jodi Aspden. “People of all ages, toddlers to seniors, everybody’s welcome.”

“I remember coming here as a 20-year-old to do the Dance for Heart,” said Kelly Spencer of Indigo Lounge.

“We’re taking off on that,” said Town of Tillsonburg’s Donna Burditt.

“Leg warmers and headbands,” Spencer laughed. “We rocked in the 80s and 90s.”

Tillsonburg’s 2013 Dance for Heart is for people who want to dance or learn to dance, or would like to watch dance.

To help raise funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, pledge forms/envelopes are available at the Tillsonburg Community Centre customer service desk and participating dance studios

“We want them to go out and get sponsors,” nodded Town of Tillsonburg’s Julie Dawley, “but if they can’t get pledges, we’ll accept $5 at the door, put their name on a heart and put it up on the wall.

“But people who get sponsors will get the VIP, front row, centre,” said Dawley.

“They get prizes too,” said Burditt, noting incentive prizes will be provided by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Incentive are offered at five levels – Level 1 earns a Heart and Stroke T-shirt, Level 2 earns an aluminum water bottle and T-shirt, Level 3 earns a sports bag and T-shirt, Level 4 earns binoculars and T-shirt, and Level 5 earns an iPod and T-shirt.

“Teams that raise the most amount will also get gift certificates from Indigo Lounge and Café,” said Spencer.

“And we’ll do door prizes – it’ll be a great day,” said Dawley.

Dance instructors from Imagine Dance and Fitness, Indigo Lounge, Tillsonburg Senior Centre, and the Tillsonburg Community Centre, will provide three hours of dance instruction on the 27th in different dance disciplines.

Dance performances and demonstrations will be included throughout the three-hour program showcasing dance talent in Tillsonburg.

Indigo Lounge is presenting Zumba, Dance Yoga, and Yoga Stretch at Dance for Heart, with four different teachers.

“As well, we’re going to have a booth to sell protein and spinach smoothies,” said Spencer, “with proceeds going to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.”

A portion of proceeds from Indigo’s yoga or zumba class registrations (‘punch cards’) will also go to Heart and Stroke.

Tillsonburg Senior Centre is presenting Clogging and Line Dancing demonstrations and instruction.

“We will also have a display promoting the Senior Centre fitness programs, showcasing the different programs we offer to seniors in the community,” said Senior Centre’s Karen Rohrer, noting Senior Centre programs like square dancing and fitness (three levels), yoga, and a new Zumba Gold program that begins April 30th with a free class.

“Showing what we have to offer to help people age gracefully,” Rohrer added with a smile.

Imagine Dance and Fitness is presenting Zumba Gold, Drums Alive (drum fitness), Line Dancing, and Bounce Fit.

“Keeping with our health and wellness theme,” said Aspden, “we can provide businesses with an eight-foot table – for a minimum $50 donation to Heart and Stroke – and they can promote their healthy products or services. Contact the Community Centre for more information.”

“Anything to do with health and wellness,” nodded Dawley.

Also on the 27th, which coincides with National Dance Week April 22-29, Imagine Dance and Fitness is launching Bounce Fit with a full class 6-7 p.m., followed by a Zumba Party from 7-10 p.m. at the Community Centre.

“People have to pre-register for the Bounce Fit class,” said Imagine Dance and Fitness’ Lena Kovacs. “We have to know how many people want to rent the boots.”

There is a fee of $10 for the Bounce Fit class, and admission to the Zumba Party is $10 as well, with all proceeds going to Heart and Stroke.

“Bounce Fit is new to this area,” said Kovacs, “but it’s been in Toronto four about 10 years. I went to Toronto for my classes. It was a 45 minute class… I was hooked within the first three songs.”
