Family Literacy Day this Thursday

The 15th Annual Family Literacy Day celebration is encouraging Canadians to share ’15 Minutes of Fun’ each day with young family members.
Family Literacy Day is celebrated annually in Canada on January 27, an initiative started by ABC Life Literacy. Its mandate is to promote literacy activities among families and children and educate the community about the positive impact the activities can have on a child’s contemporary and later learning.
The event has proven particularly popular in Tillsonburg, traditionally held at Annandale School. And while the venue has changed, its inherent character and focus will remain the same.
Tillsonburg’s Family Literacy Day 2013 will be held at Avondale United Church this Thursday (March 7) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., activities are scheduled to begin 15 minutes later.
Mother Goose will be on hand to share songs and nursery rhymes, participating children (who must be accompanied by an adult) will have the opportunity to create crafts and enjoy other activities, including listening to a half-dozen special guest story readers including Mayor John Lessif and Sydnie Lane, Branch Supervisor at the Oxford County Library, Tillsonburg Branch.
Snacks are being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Tillsonburg and the Kinette Club of Tillsonburg will provide a free book for each child who attends.
Family Literacy Day is a community-based initiative supported by the Oxford Ontario Early Years Centre, Oxford County Library, Tillsonburg Branch, Tillsonburg Children’s Centre, Oxford Children’s Aid Society, SonBeam Child Care, First Baptist Weekday Nursery, St. Joseph’s Catholic School and many individual volunteers.
