The first and only all-candidates debate for the upcoming by-election to chose a new deputy mayor in Bayham, has been set for Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Straffordville Community Centre at 7 p.m.

John Hueston will moderate the meeting.

Spectators and residents in attendance will receive an introductory program with a short background and biography of each candidate, and will include a brief synopsis of what each candidate feels is the most important issue for the Municipality of Bayham. After the candidates are introduced, the meeting will go directly to questions, on municipal issues, posed to candidates from the audience.

Bayham Mayor Paul Ens, is one of dozens of area residents expected to take in the all-candidates debate.

“It’s really important that the residents have a chance to ask questions or hear what the candidates have to say and what their platform is,” said Ens. “Otherwise you don’t know what they hope to accomplish (as deputy mayor), what their goals are or what they would like to see for the future of Bayham.”

Ens said all candidates debates like the one on March 4, is an important tool in the democratic process and will provide a good opportunity for residents to learn about each candidate and their views on important issues pertaining to the municipality.

Allowing for questions from the audience members themselves, rather than a chosen individual or a moderator, is also an important step.

“That way at least the people, if there’s a question that is of interest to them, can ask the candidates,” Ens added. “I plan on attending. I’m going to be voting as well, so I want to see what the candidates have to say.”

There are four candidates running for the position of deputy mayor in Bayham – Bob Lozon, Lynn Acre, Cliff Evanitski and Rainey Weisler.
