Langton peewees play in C Final

Langton Master Mechanic peewees came off a three-week break through the holiday season to play in their own three-day Joe Callens Memorial Novice and Peewee Rep Hockey Tournament.

“Turkey hangover?” Langton Master Mechanic coach Andy Koot laughed after Sunday’s peewee C final against Wainfleet, a 4-1 loss.

“We had three really good games in December,” said Koot, recalling a high-scoring league game against Aylmer and another nailbiter against Simcoe. “We were riding on such a high, then we had three weeks off…”

Langton lost 4-1 to Aylmer in the tournament’s peewee opener early Saturday morning. Tied 1-1 early in the third on a goal by Michael Smithson, Langton’s bid for a win over their Southern Counties rival fell short when the Flames scored three unanswered goals.

Hagersville defeated Langton 6-1 Saturday afternoon, and South West blanked Langton 7-0 Sunday morning.

“It’s nice to six (peewee) teams in our tournament this year. And all about the same calibre.”

Langton’s match against Wainfleet, who had lost 1-0 earlier in the tournament to Aylmer, in Sunday’s C Final was a close game despite the final score. Captain Michael Smithson scored with 38.8 seconds remaining to spoil Wainfleet's shutout.

“They played pretty good – they definitely played better than the last two. That last goal was a huge goal, a moral victory for us.”

Langton Minor Hockey’s annual Joe Callens Memorial Tournament is usually a novice, atom, peewee tourney with four teams in each division. This year they had more interest in peewee, adding two extra teams and a C Final.

“It was a ‘random’ round-robin for the peewees, everybody played three games, but you didn’t play everybody,” said Langton Minor Hockey’s Michel Vandendriessche.

“Joe Callens was always a staple here in the arena, working or watching hockey,” said Koot. “I thought Joe was a good guy to come in and talk to – I’d always go into the office to talk to Joe and Dave (Leighfield).

“Everybody knew Joe. He was a good guy and he always supported the Langton community. I know this would mean a lot to him, to have a tournament named after him. It’s always nice to see the Callens boys, his nephews Maddox and Peyton, dropping the puck for it.”

SOUTHERN COUNTIES

Langton’s Southern Counties Minor Hockey Association season continues Wednesday.

“We’re just finishing up the Southern Counties regular season, then it’s C Division playoffs.”

Langton’s coaches do not have a league playoff schedule yet, but they anticipate a seven-team (six games) division leading up to a traditional championship weekend.

“Hopefully when we get into playoffs we can get on a roll,” Koot smiled. “We haven’t seen most of them (potential C opponents) yet… it’s tough to gauge this year.”

OMHA DD playoffs begin Sunday, Jan. 13 in Cayuga as Langton kicks off a best-of-five (six-point) series on the road. Cayuga visits Langton on the 16th at 8 p.m. and Langton returns to Cayuga on the 20th for Game 3.
