Generosity benefits kids in South America

A simple shoebox can help brighten the holiday season for a child in a Third World country.

Students at Delhi District Secondary School recently assembled 42 shoeboxes for the Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child.

“It’s a combination of school supplies, hygiene products, toys, hats, mitts and socks,” said Luann Beselaere-Hammond, staff supervisor of the school-wide collection organized by the family studies classes and the Me to We club.

Students were asked to assemble gifts for either a male or female child in three age categories, from infant to teenager.

It is a small gesture that makes charitable work easier.

“It doesn’t seem that overwhelming,” said Beselaere-Hammond. “I think the students enjoy that they are putting together a box that is going to students as is.”

Members of the community also contributed to the project by donating shoebox items or by making a cash donation.

This year, the boxes will be sent to children in South America.

While the school participates in the program annually, this year students were inspired by their second trip to We Day in Toronto.

“Just seeing the enthusiasm of the kids there…I just hoped to ignite that in some of our students,” said Beselaere-Hammond.

DDSS students will continue their charitable drive next month with a toy drive for the women’s shelter in Simcoe. Students will be collecting new unwrapped toys throughout the month.

Beselaere-Hammond noted it can sometimes be a challenge getting new items, so the school is also collecting gently used black dress shoes to donate to Tumaini Children’s Foundation.

Cherie Szucs from the Tumaini Children’s Foundation will speak to members of the DDSS Me to We club on Nov. 29.

“It’s just a good time to inspire the students,” said Beselaere-Hammond.
