Victorian Christmas

Article content

At the beginning of the 19th Century, Christmas was hardly celebrated.

By the end of the 19th Century, Christmas had become the huge annual celebration it is today and many credit Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, for bringing about this change. Come to Annandale National Historic Site in Tillsonburg between Nov. 23 and Jan. 7 and learn more about the Victorian Christmas.

“We chose this theme for our Christmas exhibit as this year marks Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee and, like Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria also celebrated a Diamond Jubilee as monarch,” said Patricia Phelps, curator at Annandale NHS. “Many of the Christmas traditions that we celebrate were popularized in Queen Victoria’s time… it really was the beginning of the holiday festivities that we enthusiastically celebrate today.”

Open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 pm., all are invited to tour Annandale House and all three of its floors, which have been decorated for Christmas thanks to the help of more than 40 volunteers. Group tours welcome. Please contact the museum for admission rates (519-842-2294).

Step back in time this Christmas with a visit to Annandale National Historic Site over the holidays.
