Key Club Spaghetti Fundraiser

Article content

Every two years District Key Clubs join together in order to support a service project.

This is the second year in which the local Eastern Canada district has been raising support for the Eliminate Project. This is an initiative that aims to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, worldwide. This virus is fatal for over 60,000 babies each year, according to the Eliminate Project webpage. The website also describes the vast quantities of resources and donations that will be needed for this project, $110 million which translates into 100 million immunizations.

Key Club is a high school based organization supported by the Kiwanis Club. In recent years they have volunteered for a number of causes, like the annual Thanksgiving food drive, raised thousands of dollars through movie nights, Relay for Life, and supported and promoted literacy during National Reading Week, which takes place beginning of May.

The club purchases books for elementary schools, reading to the children and donating the books to the schools.

In order to support The Eliminate Project, the local Glendale HS Key Club will be holding a spaghetti dinner and silent auction on Thursday, Nov. 15. All proceeds will go to the Eliminate project. Their goal is to raise $2,000… $625 of which was raised through last year's fundraising efforts. This year they hope to double that amount and $1375 is needed to reach the goal.

The generosity of local businesses was noted by Glendale Key Club president Sidney Robertson.

"We had lots of businesses within the community donate some things for the auction," said Robertson. "We have gift cards for services, gyms, massages, career coaching, a painting, tickets for theatres, the Toronto zoo, and East Park."

The Kiwanis, which is the founding organization of Key Club, and UNICEF partnership has achieved one of the greatest health successes in the 20th century, with their past project that helped tackle iodine deficiency disorders.

Let’s help them do it again, this time eradicating maternal and neonatal tetanus, globally.

Tickets can be purchased at Glendale High School (519) 842-4207 ext. 65055, or by contacting any local Key Club members.

More information about the Eliminate Project can be found at keyclub.org, under the serve tab, or by contacting local key club members.
